Colombia 1826Bo 4 escudos rev Eliasberg 1568.jpg
This specimen was lot 1568 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $42,550. The catalog description[1] noted,
"1826 JF 4 escudos. Bogotá mint. MS-64 (NGC). Types as above. Satiny greenish gold with faint orange overtones on the reverse. Fully lustrous and well struck, only very light traces of central granularity. A superb example, perhaps the finest surviving specimen of this one year type extant. Sedwick called this issue RRR, while the Norweb cataloguer enthusiastically reported 'about three examples known' in describing the 'attractive very fine' example in that collection. A piece was included in May 1990 Sotheby's Geneva sale, graded 'fine and very rare,' and the superb Hammel specimen was graded EF; it sold for $4,000 on a $2,500 estimate in 1982. The issue is unpriced in KM above Very Fine, and for as rare as it is, it could probably be left unpriced in other grades as well. The return of this coin to the marketplace represents a unique opportunity for specialists in Colombian gold coins. Harry F. Williams, writing ca. 1918, reported seeing only two specimens of this type -- one photographed by Edgar Adams and Medina's, which he reported as having an 1827 date. He noted, sadly, 'none have been offered me.' From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
The Colombian mints occasionally issued four escudos during colonial times but this rare type is the only four escudos issued after independence.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, .875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 13.46 grams, 30.70 mm diameter.
