The first specimen was lot 20773 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1819-FM Popayán, XF45 NGC, very clean and attractive surfaces. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." The second specimen was lot 23658 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1819-FM Popayán, AU58 NGC, a choice example from the Popayán Mint with bold details and considerable original luster, well above most seen in the market." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1808-20. Nuevo Reino and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common, tho the price of gold has made this coin expensive. Assayer FM is recorded for 1816-20.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 66.2.
