from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 40035
Colombia SB818-40035r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40035 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1783-JJ Escudo. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). VF-30 (PCGS). Well circulated but not abused, with light yellow gold surfaces. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Christie's Geneva sale of the Kurt Homme Collection, November 25-26, 1981, lot 875 (part)." This specimen is one of a type struck at Popayán 1772-89. The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino) concentrated on minting gold, to the near exclusion of silver which predominated at the other colonial mints. While this makes Colombian colonial silver coins expensive, Colombian colonial gold is (comparatively) reasonable and this type is fairly common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, .901 fine gold, .098 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Restrepo 52.26, Fr-41, KM 48.1.
