Colombia SB818-40031r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40031 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1781-JJ Escudo. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). EF-45 (PCGS). Attractively toned and highly original. Magnified scrutiny reveals an old scrape under D.G. on the obverse that is unobtrusive and inoffensive. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Christie's Geneva sale of the Kurt Homme Collection, November 25-26, 1981, lot 873." This type was struck at Popayán and Nuevo Reino 1772-84 and was superseded by a type which, though identical to the naked eye, was only .875 fine.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, .901 fine gold, .098 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Restrepo 52.22, KM 48.1, Fr-41.
