This specimen was lot 40021 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1776-SF Escudo. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-53 (PCGS). Medium yellow gold with bold lustrous flash on the reverse. A bit soft at the rims, but very appealing overall. Some hairlines and a light mark atop the portrait do little to detract. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." This type was struck 1772-84, to be succeeded by KM 48.2a, which is identical to the naked eye but is only .875 fine.
