This specimen was lot 40015 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1773-VJ Escudo. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). MS-64 (PCGS). Frosty and lustrous, a superb near Gem. The obverse shows some matte-finish texture from die rust, but both sides are extremely sharp, flashy, and attractive. A rarity in this grade. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Mühlenkamp, February 1973." This type was struck 1772-84, to be succeeded by KM 48.1a, which is identical to the naked eye but is only .875 fine.
