Sedwick sale 11, lot 1026
This specimen is one of a series struck intermittently 1772-84 at the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint during the reign of Charles III. The type is scarce, tho not as rare as the preceding pillar types from Colombia. Restrepo[1] recorded only one known pillar half real, a 1760NR. The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino, now Bogotá) were prolific issuers of gold but little silver prior to about 1810. The second specimen shown was lot 1026 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $10,350. The catalog description[2] noted,
"Bogotá, Colombia, bust 1/2 real, Charles III, 1772VJ, rare, Restrepo plate coin. 1.6 grams. Bold XF with light toning around details, slightly grainy reverse (as made), no problems, a very nice specimen of a key rarity, quite worthy of its Restrepo-reference pedigree (pictured 3 times normal size on page 170 of his book). Curiously, the denomination on this first issue is shown as 1 with a horizontal bar through the middle. Plate coin in Restrepo's Monedas de Colombia (2009). Jorge Ortiz Murias collection of Colombian colonial minors."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, .903 fine silver, .049 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-45.1; Restrepo-32.1; CT-1824.
