This specimen was lot 1490 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $10,350. The catalog description[1] noted,
"1771/0 4 escudos. Bogotá mint. AU-58 (NGC). Young bust of Carlos III to right, legends around, date below/crowned square arms, legends around. Deep yellow gold with good lustre and reflectivity in the reverse fields. Flat area on edge above and to right of king's head, but with some edge device, probably not mounted considering the surface quality of the piece. A fine vertical scratch is noted through the portrait. A bold and attractive example of this elusive issue. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
This type was struck 1769-71 and ended a ten year hiatus in four escudos at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá).
