Colombia SB818-40153r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40153 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $5,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1770-VJ 2 Escudos. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-55 (PCGS). Essentially perfect for the grade, with abundant cartwheel luster, rich yellow gold surfaces, and no significant flaws. Well struck and well centered, with an excellent portrait and great frost. An elusive issue, particularly in such fine grade. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Don Canaparo, January 1981." This specimen is one of a series struck 1762-71 at the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint, which switched to the "rat nose" bust midway thru 1762. While the two escudos is a rare denomination for Mexico, it is common for the Colombian mints tho the "rat nose" style is scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, .917 fine gold, .199 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 40, Fr-33, Restrepo 60.18.
