Colombia 1763NR 8 escudos rev Eliasberg 1477.jpg
This specimen was lot 1477 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $10,925. The catalog description[1] noted,
"1763 JV 8 escudos. Bogotá mint. MS-61 (NGC). Bust of Carlos III to right, legends around/crowned square arms, garter, legends around. Rich yellow gold with slight golden brown toning accents around some devices, thorough lustre, some trivial obverse hairlines. Some subtle parallel adjustment marks noted at base of shield, vertical die flaw as struck in right obverse field. An impressive quality specimen of this popular and scarce 'rat nose' type, struck at only Santa Fe de Bogotá and Lima in 1763. Far more lustrous than usually seen. This date is called 'rara' (rare) in Calico. Struck from an interesting obverse die, with guide lines still visible in a distinctive arc beneath the legends. A and S of CAROLUS are broadly recut, other letters less so, and two bold stops are side by side after DG. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942. Plated in Wayte Raymond's Spanish American Gold Coins, 1936, and the serial published in Coin Collector's Journal, Vol. 1, #10, January 1935, p. 224."
This type was struck 1762-71 at Nuevo Reino (KM 41, Bogotá, mintmark "NR"). The neighboring Popayán mint minted eight escudos at the same time but used the bust of Ferdinand VI (KM 38.2, struck 1760-71).

Recorded mintage: unknown.
