This specimen was lot 11152 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1761-JV 8 Escudos. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-58 (PCGS). Frosty medium yellow gold with somewhat darker toning at the rims. Perfectly centered and well struck with no flaws more severe than typical hairlines. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Christie's Geneva sale of the Kurt Homme Collection, November 25-26, 1981, lot 844." This type was struck at Popayán 1760-71 and at Bogotá 1760-62. Unlike later dates (after 1772), these early issues are rare.
