This specimen was lot 1461 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,610. It is one of a series struck 1756-59 at the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint; it is listed as the toughest of the four known dates. A similar coin was struck 1758-59 at Popayán. This type is known for other colonial mints but is prohibitively expensive therefrom. The catalog description[1] noted, "1758 J 1 escudo. Bogotá mint. EF-45 (NGC). Types as above. Uniform deep gold, an attractive example. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, .917 fine gold, .098 troy oz ASW. This specimen: 3.36 grams, 18.10 mm diameter.
