This specimen was lot 11035 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1653-PoRAS 8 Reales. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Philip IV (1621-1665). XF Detail — Salt Water Damage (PCGS). Dark gray toning applied for contrast serves to outline and elevate the devices. The obverse is well struck and mostly smooth, though some granularity is seen at the peripheries. The date is very bold, as is RAS of the assayer and the top of the mintmark. The legend PLVS VLTRA is definitively sharp. The reverse is significantly more granular but still shows a well-centered and fairly bold shield. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins." This type was struck intermittently 1651-65. For 1653, we see assayers PORMS, PORS, PORAS and P.OMS, who may all be one person or at most two.
