This specimen was lot 1673 in Goldberg sale 106 (Los Angeles, September 2018), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "China. 10 Yuan, 1987-Y. Panda drinking water. NGC graded MS-69." The "Y" stamped into the obverse may have been a mintmark, applied to increase variety and therefore sales. Proofs were marked "P" and the Shanghai mint product marked "s". The experiment was discontinued a few years later.

Recorded mintage: 134,598 (combined s + y) + 10,000 proofs (marked P).

Specification: 3.11 g, .999 fine gold, 0.100 troy oz AGW.
