This specimen was lot 30439 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $587.50. The catalog description noted, "Republic gold 2 Escudos 1844-IJ, XF40 NGC. An attractive, original piece with evenly toned surfaces and no obvious flaws." This type was struck 1839-45 in small numbers and was succeeded by a refined standing liberty design (KM 102.2) 1846-51.
Recorded mintage: unknown but probably less than 5,000.
