Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 22454
SB820-22454r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22454 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Reales, 1798-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. PCGS VF-20 Gold Shield. A wholesome, evenly worn Crown with traces of dark field toning that augment the raised devices. From the BKingdom Collection." Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1791-1808, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles IV are scarce though not rare like the earlier bust eight reales of Charles III. Many can be found as the undertype of Brazilian 960 réis of 1810-26. The assayer DA appears for 1773-99.

Recorded mintage: 174,000, a common date.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13907, KM-51; El-50; Cal-Type-86#746.
