Aureo sale 238, lot 486
This specimen was lot 486 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 570 euro (about US$904 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1797. Santiago. DA. 8 reales. Leves rayitas. Rara y más así. MBC+/EBC. (eight reales of 1797, Santiago mint. Light marks, rare thus, choice Very fine.)"
Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1791-1808, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles IV are scarce though not rare like the earlier bust eight reales of Charles III. Many can be found as the undertype of Brazilian 960 réis of 1810-26. The assayer DA appears for 1773-99.

Recorded mintage: 195,000.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cal. 745, KM 51.
