Aureo sale 242, lot 198
The specimen shown was lot 198 in Aureo y Calico sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 4,800 € (about US$7,542 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Fernando VI (1746-1759). 1753. Santiago. J. 8 escudos. Insignificante hojita. Pátina. Brillo original. Bella. Rara así. EBC/EBC+. (Ferdinand VI, 1746-59, eight escudos of 1753, Santiago mint. Tiny dig, toned, original luster, handsome, rare, extremely fine.)"
The reverse motto, "NOMINA MAGNA SEQUOR," is Latin for "I follow a great name [Philip V]." The Nuestra Sonora de la Luz treasure rendered this type, heretofore extremely rare, quite available though still expensive for the average collector. All the specimens recovered were dated 1750-51; the other dates (1752-58) remain rare.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
