Chile SB819-20255r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20255 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Escudos, 1752-So J. Santiago Mint. Ferdinand VI. NGC AU-53. Only 2 examples graded finer at NGC. Good strike with attractive luster and no obnoxious defects." The reverse motto, "NOMINA MAGNA SEQUOR," is Latin for "I follow a great name [Philip V]." The Nuestra Sonora de la Luz treasure rendered this type, heretofore extremely rare, quite available though still expensive for the average collector. All the specimens recovered were dated 1750-51; the other dates (1752-58) remain rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10878, Fr-5; KM-3.
