Bulgaria SB816-22192r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22192 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 20 Stotinki, 1888. NGC MS-65. Population of five with two finer (MS-66) at NGC. A full gem in every respect, with a hint of rose tone over immaculate lustrous fields." Bulgaria fought a protracted war against the Ottomans, culminating in liberation from the latter's rule in 1878. The new Bulgarian state was quite weak, however, and new conflicts drew it into the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, along with Serbia and Greece, once again against the Ottomans in Turkey. This one-year type was struck for Bulgaria and is common. This specimen realized twenty times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 5,000,000 plus proofs.

Specification: copper-nickel.

Catalog reference: KM-11.
