The first specimen was lot 23865 in Heritage sale 3020, where it sold for $2,937.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Ernst August 5 Mark 1915-A, MS62 NGC, very rare first design without U LUNEB. Lightly toned with some small contact marks, a nice mint state coin with full mint luster." The second specimen was lot 3918 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 3400 CHF (about US$4,300 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg, Herzogtum Ernst August, 1913-1918. 5 Mark 1915, Berlin. Titel ohne Lüneburg. Mit Gemahlin Viktoria Luise von Preussen, zum Regierungsantritt. Polierte Platte. (Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg, Ernest August, 1913-18, five mark of 1915, Berlin mint, obverse legend without Luneburg. With duchess Victoria Louisa of Prussia, on their coronation, proof.)"
This type is rare. The obverse was modified later in the issue to add "u. Luneb." (Dav-638).

Recorded mintage: 1,400.

Specification: 27.77 g, .900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.
