This specimen was lot 20562 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. 2 Talers, 1683-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolf August (1666-1704). NGC MS-61. Mintmaster Rudolph Bornemann. The duke gallops left, marshal's baton in hand, denomination ("2") punched in below the horse's hoof; Reverse: Five-helmeted arms. A wonderful example of a 17th century Loser Taler. Sharply struck with light attractive tone and strong underlying soft satin luster." Like most double thalers, this one year type is rare. It is accompanied by a 1½ thaler (Dav-LS108).
