Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1642 thaler Dav-6347
Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel and is among the more common thalers of the period. Similar thalers featuring a half length bust of the duke appeared until 1648. This specimen was lot 799 in Sincona sale 11 (Zurich, May 2013), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$371 including buyer's fees). The catalog description noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND -Wolfenbüttel August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Taler 1642, Zellerfeld. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, thaler of 1642, Zellerfeld mint. Very fine.)"This type was struck 1639-46 and is very similar to Dav-6346 (struck 1638-39) and Dav-6348 (struck 1647-50), both common.
