This specimen was lot 2634 in Sincona sale 26 (Zurich, October 2015), where it sold for 17,000 CHF (about US$20,999 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634 6 Taler 1634. Zellerfeld Ausbeute der Grube St. Jakob. Stempelschneider Issak Henningk. Löser mit Wertpunze "6" auf dem Revers. Münzmeister Henning Schlüter. Fünffach behelmtes Wappen von zwei Löwen gehalten. Rv. St. Jakob mit Stab und Buch in einer Landschaft mit Kirche und Gebäuden sowie Göpel und Zechenhaus der Grube St. Jacob. Von grosser Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Schrötlingsfehler im Revers und am Rand. (Germany, principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, sextuple thaler of 1634, Zellerfled mint, for the mines of St. Jacob, dies by Issak Henningk, with a '6' punched into the reverse, mint master Henning Schlüter. Obverse: five helmeted arms supported by lions; reverse: St. Jacob with staff and book in landscape with church and mine buildings. Very rare, very fine, planchet defects on reverse and on the edge.)"
These massive coins were doubtless issued as gifts by the duke to insiders and were not intended to circulate but occasionally needs press.
