Sincona sale 6, lot 616
This specimen was lot 616 in Sincona sale 6 (Zurich, May 2012), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum Heinrich d. Jüngere, 1514–1568. Taler 1531, Riechenberg. Mzm. Valentin von Stogkhem. Stsch.: Melchior Peuerlein aus Nürnberg. Helm über vierfeldigem Wappen. Rv. Behelmter Krieger sitzt von vorn, in der rechten Hand ein gezücktes Schwert, in der Linken ein Schild haltend. Zu seinen Füssen kauernde Löwe. Gutes sehr schön. Der älteste Taler von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. (Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Wolfenbuttel, thaler of 1531, Riechenberg mint, mintmaster Valentin von Stogkhem, designer Melchior Peuerlein of Nürnberg. Obverse: helmet over quartered arms; reverse helmeted soldier brandishes sword and shield, prostrate lion at feet. Good very fine, the oldest thaler of the duchy.)"
This thaler was issued by the dukes of Brunswick. The dukes split and recombined numerous times in the sixteenth century so we have filed this issue under both German States, Brunswick-Luneburg and German States, Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel.
