Stack's Bowers 2015 ANA sale, lot 30304

This specimen was lot 30304 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle. 1 1/2 Taler, 1664-LW. Christian Ludwig (1648-65). NGC AU-55. Well struck with minimal doubling and full details in the mining scene. Crowned monogram 'CL' countermark on rump of horse. We could find only three other specimens that have crossed the auction block in the past decade, with none better than EF. The coin offered is likely the finest extant." This issue was accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-LS189), a triple thaler (Dav-LS188) and a quadruple thaler (Dav-LS187).
