This specimen was lot 665 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €4,400 (about US$5,930 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM Ernst August, 1679-1698, seit 1662 Bischof von Osnabrück. Löser zu 1 1/2 Reichstalern 1688, Zellerfeld. Ausbeute der Harzer Gruben. Mit Wertpunze. Preussag Collection (Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1) 214. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (duchies of Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick Wolfenbuttel, Ernest Augustus, 1679-98, since 1662 bishop of Osnabruck, 1½ thaler of 1688, Zellerfeld mint, for the Harz mines, with denomination punch. Beautiful toning, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The multiple thalers of Brunswick come in many different types, all rare and expensive. By punching in the denomination after the coin was struck, the same dies could be used to make double, triple, even quadruple thalers. This issue was accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-LS244).
