British West Africa 1938 1/10 penny
This specimen was lot 22214 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $288. The catalog description noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 1/10 Penny, 1938. NGC PROOF-66. A remarkably preserved proof of the issue with deeply reflective, mirror-like quality in the fields and subtle yellow, peach and blue toning accents on each side that add a charming element of originality to the surfaces. Ex: David Vice Collection." British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. Copper-nickel one-tenth pennies were issued for the region starting in 1907. This type was issued 1938-1947 and this is the most common date.
