the "BBASIL" error

Shown is an aluminum bronze thousand réis of the United States of Brazil. It commemorated the centennial of independence from Portugal and was issued with an aluminum bronze five hundred réis (KM 521) and a silver two thousand réis (KM 523). It would be easy to dismiss the "BBASIL" error shown here as a die break except that it is known for the five hundred réis as well. The thousand réis error earns a slight premium but the five hundred réis error is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 16,698,000.

Specification: 7.8 g, aluminum bronze, 26.8 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 522.1 (regular issue) and 522.2 ("BBASIL" error).
