CNG Lissner sale, lot 1305

This specimen was lot 1305 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $181.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL, Republic. 1889-1930. AR 1000 Réis. Rio de Janeiro mint. Dated 1889. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 61. Moderate mottled toning overall. Only one graded higher in MS 62. A one year only type. Purchased from Coin Galleries, January 1971." Tho not rare, this type is much less often seen than its smaller sister, the five hundred réis (KM 494). An 1889 500 réis from the Empire also exists.

Recorded mintage: 296,000.

Specification: 12.75 g, .917 fine silver, this specimen Ø30mm, 12.71 g, 6h axis.
