In 1867 the silver coinage was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. The type went thru several minor modifications before settling on the final type shown here, struck 1876-89. The 1888 and 1889 are very common, the 1876 somewhat scarce and the 1886 and 1887 are rare.

Recorded mintage: 333,000.

Specification: 6.375 g, .917 fine silver, .188 troy oz ASW.
