This date, one of a series struck 1853-89, is among the moderately priced gold coins of the Empire of Brazil. This specimen was lot 23125 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 10000 Reis 1880, MS63 NGC. An eye-catching Choice representative with semi-prooflike obverse fields and radiant cartwheel luster on the reverse."

Recorded mintage: 9,806 (a slightly better date).

Specification: 8.96 g, .917 fine gold, .264 troy oz.
