In the early years of the Empire of Brazil, the coinage endured several reforms. The old 960 réis was revalued to 1200 réis in 1834, then 2000 réis in 1848. The 2000 réis was accompanied by 1000, 500 and 200 réis in silver. This five hundred réis is a common date of a type struck 1853-67; later issues featured the portrait of the Emperor.
