This specimen was lot 6110 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $199.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 400 Reis, 1847/0. NGC EF Details--Excessive Surface Hairlines. RARE being from a mintage of only 878 pieces. Mild slate toning over surfaces with some hairlines present." This silver 400 réis was minted 1834-48 in Rio de Janeiro, with 1834, 1835 and 1837 being the reasonably available dates. The series came accompanied by 100 réis, 200 réis, 800 réis and 1200 réis in silver. The 400 réis had the same specification as the old 320 réis last minted in 1833.
