Brazil 1824-R 640 reis
This specimen was part of lot 23308 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description noted, "Collection of Silver 640 Reis, a great date run of this larger denomination with many scarce dates and varieties included. Grades are surprisingly nice with most coins in the Fine to VF category." This silver 640 réis was minted at the Rio mint 1824-27. These coins would have traded in the 18th century as two-thirds of a Spanish dollar. In 1768 the weight of this denomination was lowered from 19.32 grams to 17.80 grams. Earlier silver 640 réis are known, starting in 1695. Of this type, the 1824 and 1825 are reasonably available.
Recorded mintage: 80,000.
Specification: 17.92 g, .917 fine silver, .528 troy oz ASW.
