Brazil 1816R 80 reis rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen is a three year type struck at the Rio mint for Brazil. Similar silver eighty réis were struck at Rio during 1810, 1814 and 1816 (KM 305) and at Bahia during 1821 (KM 322.2). All are scarce, especially compared to the contemporary copper eighty réis, which was issued in large quantities starting in 1818. The copper 80 réis continued into the reign of Emperor Pedro I (1823-32) but the silver 80 réis is restricted to some very rare issues of 1824, 1826 and 1833 (KM 372 and KM 388).

Earlier silver eighty réis are known, starting in 1695 (see KM 77, 78, 87, 160, 167, 190, 204 and 219). All are scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.24 g, .917 fine silver, .066 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 305.
