Brazil 1787 10 reis
This specimen was struck at the Lisbon mint for Brazil in 1786-96. The minting of copper ten réis began in 1693 and continued steadily thru the eighteenth century. This marks the last type of the large size; the issue of 1799 is the size and weight of the old five réis. All the copper denominations were affected; the five réis was dropped entirely. In 1809, old issues (including this specimen) were recalled and countermarked with a shield to double their value.
Recorded mintage: 314,000.
