This specimen was lot 23845 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $8,812.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I & Pedro III gold 4000 Reis 1786, MS62 NGC. Mintage of 3000. A seldom available date with frosty luster and rich orange-gold surfaces. Rare in any grade, and especially desirable in Mint State. Ex-Norweb (lot#895- Spink America March 1997) From The RLM Collection, Part II." The type was struck 1778-86 without mintmark. Later types exist dated 1787-1822. It is the largest of the "moedas provinciales" series and the only one that can be called somewhat common, tho this type is scarce.

Specification: 8.07 g, .917 fine gold, .237 troy oz AGW.
