Brazil 1778 4000 reis
This specimen was lot 23842 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description noted, "Maria I & Pedro III gold 4000 Reis 1778, AU58 NGC. Quite appealing, narrow crown. Attractive gradient red and orange color. Maria and Pedro 4000 Reis are quite difficult to find and Dr. Monteiro was able to put together quite a date run with almost all pieces in choice AU or MS condition. Ex-Norweb (lot#893- Spink America March 1997) From The RLM Collection, Part II." The type was struck 1778-86 without mintmark. Later types exist dated 1787-1822. It is the largest of the "moedas provinciales" series and the only one that can be called somewhat common, tho this type is scarce.
