This silver 320 réis was minted at the Bahia mint during 1757-58. This coin would have traded in the 18th century as one-third of a Spanish dollar. The 320 réis is half the size of the more common 640 réis. In 1768 the weight of this denomination was lowered from 9.66 grams to 8.90 grams. Earlier silver 320 réis are known, starting in 1695. Many are priced very low in the SCWC but remain very hard to find. The first specimen was lot 20393 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $402.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I 320 Reis 1757B, toned Fine, evenly worn details, scarce date." The second specimen was part of lot 23307 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[2] noted, "Collection of Silver 320 Reis, a very nice selection, primarily in Fine to VF quality. This group covers a wide range of dates, and we definitely suggest careful viewing if you want to be competitive." The similar KM 169.1 and 169.2 were struck 1751-58 and is more available tho not common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.66 g, .917 fine silver, .284 troy oz ASW.
