This specimen was lot 23203 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I 640 Reis 1756(L), Coroa com Forro, nearly VF, cleaned at one time and now toned. Very scarce variety. Struck at Lisbon without mintmark. From The Santana Collection of 640 Reis." This type was struck 1751-55 at Rio (KM 170.1), 1752-56 at Lisbon (KM 170.2, shown here) and 1757-58 at Bahia (KM 170.3 and 170.4).

Specification: 19.32 g, .917 fine silver, .569 troy oz ASW.
