Brazil 1753cs XL reis rev DSLR.jpg

The minting of copper forty réis began in 1722 and continued sporadically thru the eighteenth century. This specimen was struck at the Lisbon mint for Brazil in 1753. It began life as a forty réis but many were countermarked in 1809 to raise its value to eighty réis. Issues became larger and more frequent after 1802. Large numbers were minted until 1831, well after independence. Counterfeits are numerous but are collected alongside the genuine issues.

Recorded mintage: 121,000.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM 184.1.
