This specimen was lot 20127 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I gold 4000 Reis 1753(L), AU58 NGC, lightly toned and appealing with plenty of luster. Legends with the King's name starting with an 'I' rather than 'J'." Both "IOSEPHUS" and "JOSEPHUS" are noted for 1753 with "JOSEPHUS" being the more common.

Recorded mintage: 22,000.

Specification: 10.75 g, .917 fine gold, .317 troy oz AGW.
