This specimen was lot 23181 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $25,850. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 12800 Reis 1727B, AU53 NGC, very rare type struck at the Bahia Mint. The details are quite bold and there is considerable mint luster, however the obverse surface displays a light scattering of tiny contact marks." This denomination was struck at Bahia (KM 141, shown here), Rio (KM 140) and Minas (KM 139). All are expensive but the Bahia issues are rare.

Specification: 28.68 g, .917 fine gold, .845 troy oz AGW.
