Brazil c1809 960 reis rev DSLR.jpg

This silver eight reales was counterstamped at the Minas Gerais mint in 1808 to legalize its circulation as a 960 réis. These coins were usually struck over Spanish-American dollars. The general overstriking which commenced at Bahia and Rio in 1810 made this local counterstamp redundant. The first specimen was lot 20498 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "Minas Gerais 960 Counterstamp on Mexican 8 Reales 1808, host coin is VF, c/s is XF. Vast majority of Minas countermarks are found on Bolivian and Peruvian 8 Reales, with Mexico being one of the rarer host coins." The second specimen was lot 40445 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $2,350. The catalog description[2] noted, "BRAZIL. Minas Gerais. 960 Reis, ND (1808). NGC EF Details--Reverse Scratched. Minas Gerais countermark on an 1806-FJ 8 Reales of Chile. Some light scratches on reverse. Both host coin and countermark are EXTREMELY FINE." The third specimen was lot 40441 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[2] noted, "BRAZIL. Minas Gerais. 960 Reis, ND (1809). PCGS VF-30 Secure Holder. Minas Gerais countermark on a 1790-PR 8 Reales with transitional bust from Bolivia. Lightly toned. Both host coin and countermark are VERY FINE."
