Sincona sale 38, lot 1144
This specimen was lot 1144 in Sincona sale 38 (Zurich, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Brandenburg-Ansbach, Markgrafschaft, Johann Friedrich, 1667-1686 2 Dukaten 1683. Schwabach. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. (margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach, John Frederick, 1667-86, double ducat of 1683, Schwabach mint, Very rare, Extremely fine, Minor planchet defect.)"
Brandenburg-Ansbach was a minor state in Franconia between Nurnberg and Bamberg. It was ruled by a branch of the Hohenzollerns who considered themselves to be the senior line of the house. It was handed over to Bavaria by Napoleon. This double ducat is noted for 1672, 1677 and 1683, with all dates rare.
