Sedwick sale 25, lot 937

This specimen was lot 937 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $178.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "La Paz, Bolivia, 4 soles, 1858P, rare. Toned AVF, rare date of a scarce type that almost never comes in higher grade." The La Paz mint produced these debased four soles coins 1855-58. These coins, along with contemporary issues from the Potosi mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Though the Potosi mint would eventually reform the coinage and produce standard silver weights, La Paz mint would close. La Paz also produced debased half soles, one soles and a few two soles.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.5 g, .667 fine silver, this specimen 13.44 grams.

Catalog reference: KM-130.
