This specimen was lot 1640 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $411.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA: Republic, AR 8 soles, 1846/5-PTS. A couple scratches in reverse field, with prominent chopmark on reverse, beautiful rainbow tone, EF." This type was struck in substantial quantities 1841-46 after Bolivian independence altho the mule (KM A103) is scarce. This coin often comes poorly struck on bad planchets. Later eight soles were struck to the same weight standard until 1859, when the weight was lowered to 20 grams. Bolivia converted to decimal coinage in 1864.
