This specimen was lot 12101 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $394. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. 5 Mark, 1877. NGC AU-50." This type was struck 1877-78 only and is rather scarce. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877-78 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces.
Recorded mintage: 635,000.
