UBS sale 85, lot 1845
This specimen was lot 1845 in UBS sale 85 (Zurich, September 2010), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$627 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt Taler 1640. Stadtwappen zwischen Jahreszahl auf verzierter Wappenkartusche, darüber geflügelter Engelskopf. Rv. Links blickender Adler mit ausgebreiteten Flügeln. Patina. Gutes sehr schön." (City of Basel thaler of 1640. Obverse: city arms with date, angel's head above; reverse: eagle with wings displayed. Toned, good very fine.)
Basel struck numerous varieties of thalers (Dav-4606 thru -4610) in 1640, varying in the spelling of the city name.
